Founded with a vision to create opportunities and drive change, UEI has been at
the forefront of supporting urban entrepreneurs.
Our programs are designed to provide the resources, mentorship,
and support needed to succeed in today’s competitive landscape.
The urban context is both a source of opportunities and challenges for urban entrepreneurs. On one hand, it provides a large and diverse market, a rich and varied pool of talent, and a dynamic and vibrant culture. On the other hand, it poses complex and interrelated problems, such as congestion, pollution, inequality, and crime, requiring innovative and systemic solutions.
The urban ecosystem is the network of actors and institutions that support and influence urban entrepreneurship. It includes the public sector, private sector, civil society, academia, and media. The ecosystem can facilitate or hinder urban entrepreneurship by providing or denying access to resources like capital, knowledge, skills, networks, and infrastructure, and by creating or removing barriers such as regulations, policies, norms, and attitudes.
The urban entrepreneur is the individual or team that initiates and leads the urban entrepreneurial venture. They need a combination of skills, competencies, and mindsets to identify and seize opportunities, mobilize and manage resources, and create and deliver value in the urban context. Key attributes of urban entrepreneurs include:
A clear and compelling vision of the problem they want to solve, the solution they want to offer, and the impact they want to create.
The ability to generate novel and original ideas that address the needs and aspirations of the urban population.
The ability to transform ideas into viable and scalable products, services, or processes that create value for the urban market.
The ability to test and validate assumptions and hypotheses through rapid and iterative prototyping and feedback.
The ability to work with and leverage the strengths and resources of diverse and multidisciplinary partners and stakeholders.
The ability to inspire and motivate others to join and support their
entrepreneurial venture.
